And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…. Philippians 1:9-11
This particular passage from Paul moved me this week. The meaning I see in these words is about how increasing knowledge and perspective increases the capacity to love others and thus improves clarity on what is truly important in life. This message is timeless, and transcends any particular spiritual beliefs, as it simply addresses one of the many challenges of human nature. Expanding our personal knowledge through seeking out perspectives that are different than our own, traveling to experience new cultures, opening our minds to different views, regardless of whether we ultimately agree or disagree, changes our perceptions and ability to extend compassion. I feel we know this already, yet the reminder, thousands of years later, is still so relevant.
I was also struck by the realization that this message summarized, in a few short words, the purpose behind many of my own decisions. I am drawn to new life experiences. I think it is, at least in part, driven by a desire to embrace compassion and love for others. I am thankful for having the GRACE kids and staff as part of my life. Their smiles warm my heart, their hopes and dreams fuel my hopes and dreams, and their strength makes me stronger. My heart is fuller through knowing GRACE.
